Day 7: The 10,000 Steps Myth

"Why is Garmin not having a 10K steps goal by default?"

This question comes up constantly. New Garmin owners check their goal and see 7,400 steps, or 6,200, and assume something's wrong. It's not. Garmin is actually being smarter than you'd expect.

Where 10,000 steps came from

The 10,000-step target was popularised by a Japanese pedometer marketing campaign in the 1960s. It's a round, memorable number — not a scientific recommendation. Research since then shows the benefits plateau well before 10,000 for many people, and that the type of activity matters more than raw step count.

What Garmin does instead

Garmin uses an adaptive goal system. It analyses your step history over the past weeks and sets a goal that's challenging but realistic for you. If you've been averaging 4,000 steps, a 10,000-step goal is demotivating, not helpful.

The goal adjusts upward as you consistently hit it — a smarter progression than a fixed number for everyone.

The better metric: intensity minutes

Health organisations like the WHO recommend 150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week. Garmin tracks this as "intensity minutes." A 20-minute run contributes far more here than 2,000 steps of slow walking.

How to set a custom step goal

  1. Open Garmin Connect app
  2. Go to More → Health Stats → Steps
  3. Tap the goal and set your own number

If you want 10,000 — great. Set it. Just understand why it's not the default.
