Garmin VO2max erklärt — und wie du sie verbesserst

Was deine VO2max wirklich bedeutet, wie die Uhr sie schätzt, und ein praktischer Spickzettel aus Training, Erholung und Lifestyle, der sie steigert.
Day 98: Garmin VO2max Explained (and How to Improve It)
Everyone shows off their VO2max, but what does the number actually mean — and how do you make it go up?
What VO2max actually is
VO2max is a measure of how much oxygen your body can use during intense exercise. The more oxygen your muscles can use, the more energy they can produce, which usually means you can run, ride, or train harder and for longer. It's one of the strongest predictors of aerobic fitness and long-term health.
How your Garmin estimates it
Your watch estimates VO2max by combining your heart rate with your pace (running) or power (cycling), and analysing how your body responds during workouts. It's an estimate, not a lab test — but a consistent one. The trend matters far more than any single number.
Reading the trend
A climbing VO2max means your training is working, even when the runs feel hard. A sustained drop usually means you need more recovery, or that illness, heat, or detraining are taking a toll.
The VO2max improvement cheat sheet
You can move your VO2max, especially if you're not already highly trained. Here's the practical cheat sheet:
- Build a big Zone 2 base. Spend most of your weekly training at an easy, conversational pace (roughly 70–80% of your volume). This grows the aerobic engine that VO2max depends on.
- Add VO2max intervals once or twice a week. Classic sessions: 4×4 minutes hard with 3–4 min easy, or 8×1 minute fast with equal recovery. Work near 90–95% of your max heart rate during the hard reps.
- Be consistent. Three to five sessions a week, every week, beats the occasional hero workout. VO2max responds to a repeated, progressive stimulus.
- Recover properly. Adaptation happens during rest. Protect 7–9 hours of sleep, watch your HRV and Body Battery, and don't stack hard days when you're under-recovered.
- Progress gradually. Increase weekly load slowly (a common guide is no more than about 10% per week) to avoid injury and burnout.
- Add strength training. Stronger, more efficient muscles use oxygen better and keep you injury-free enough to train consistently.
- Manage the basics. Losing excess body weight, staying hydrated, fuelling well, and limiting alcohol all help your relative VO2max (ml/kg/min).
Give any plan 4–8 weeks before judging it — VO2max moves slowly, and the trend on your watch is the proof that it's working.
