Day 110: Garmin Can Warn You Before Your Shoes Hurt You

Running shoe foam breaks down gradually, somewhere between roughly 300 and 500 miles (500–800 km) depending on the shoe, your weight, and your stride. You can't feel this happening in real time — cushioning loses its rebound slowly enough that your body adapts without you noticing, until the extra impact catches up with your knees, shins, or hips.

Garmin already tracks this for you

Garmin Connect's Gear feature tracks the exact mileage on every pair of shoes you log a run in. Set a mileage limit once, and every run you complete in that pair adds to the total automatically — no manual logging required.

How to set it up

  1. Open the Garmin Connect app and go to More → Gear → Add Gear
  2. Add your shoes and set a mileage or distance limit (most running shoes are good for roughly 300–500 miles / 500–800 km)
  3. Assign the gear to your Run (or Treadmill) activity type
  4. Wear those shoes for the run you're about to start, and Garmin logs the distance to that pair automatically

When the alert fires

When a pair hits its limit, Garmin sends you a notification. That's your cue to retire them — not necessarily throw them out that same day, but stop counting on them for your long runs and hard efforts, where the extra impact matters most.

Replacing shoes on a schedule based on actual logged mileage, instead of "they still look fine," is one of the simplest injury-prevention habits available — and Garmin already tracks the one number that matters.
