Sunset Alerts: Your Garmin Can Help Keep You Safe at Night

Set a 'time until sunset' alert in Garmin and get a heads-up before it gets dark on your run. A small setting that makes a real safety difference.
Day 14: Sunset Alerts for Safety
"Do you feel unsafe at night? Your Garmin can help."
Running or cycling after dark is a safety concern for many people — especially women running alone. Your Garmin has a little-known alert system that can give you a heads-up before the sun goes down.
How to set it up
- On your watch, go to Settings → Notifications & Alerts → Alerts
- Select System Alerts
- Find Time Until Sunset
- Set how many minutes before sunset you want to be alerted (e.g., 30 minutes)
How it works
Garmin uses your current GPS location to calculate the precise sunset time for your area. When you're 30 minutes away (or whatever you set), you'll get a notification on your wrist.
That's your signal: time to head home, add visibility gear, or start a different route.
Why this matters
Being caught out after dark without reflective gear, a flashlight, or a safe route home is a real risk. This alert doesn't require you to check weather apps or track sunset times manually. Your watch does it automatically based on where you actually are.
Pair this with the Garmin safety features (LiveTrack + Incident Detection) for a comprehensive safety setup during solo runs.
