Connect+ isn't taking away free features — it's adding AI-powered coaching, nutrition tracking, and deeper insights on top. Here's what you actually get, what I use, and what's still missing.

Day 73: Garmin Connect+ — What You Actually Get and Whether It's Worth $6.99/Month

When Garmin launched Connect+ about a year ago, the backlash was immediate. People assumed their existing free features would be locked behind a paywall. That didn't happen. Free users kept everything they already had. Connect+ sits on top — it adds new capabilities, not replaces old ones.

Now that the dust has settled, here's a clear-eyed look at what you actually get.

What Connect+ includes

AI-powered health and training insights

This is the headline feature. Garmin's AI analyses your real sensor data 24/7 — heart rate, HRV, sleep, training load, stress, Body Battery — and surfaces patterns and recommendations specific to you. You might see observations like "Your recovery is trending lower this week — consider reducing intensity" or "Your sleep efficiency has improved 12% over the past month." These aren't generic tips; they're generated from your actual numbers.

Better coaching for running and cycling

Connect+ unlocks more detailed Suggested Workouts and adaptive training plans. The AI adjusts your schedule based on your recent training load, recovery status, and goal — not a fixed programme someone wrote for a generic athlete. If you had a hard week and your HRV is low, the plan softens. If you're recovering well, it pushes harder.

Nutrition tracking

You can log meals and track calories in and out directly in Garmin Connect, integrated with your activity data. Seeing your calorie burn from your watch alongside your food intake in the same app is genuinely useful if you're training toward a body composition goal.

The three features I actually use

Honestly, I mostly use three things: the AI morning insights (a quick daily read of where my body stands), the adaptive running coaching (it adjusts my weekly schedule around my actual recovery), and the nutrition logging (integrated with my activity calories so I can see the full picture without switching apps).

There are more features — sleep coaching, performance condition history, enhanced analytics — but these three are where I get the most real-world value.

Why Garmin beats third-party AI tools

There are a growing number of apps claiming to analyse your Garmin data with AI. A few observations:

  • They're unofficial. They access your data via workarounds, not a first-party integration.
  • They're often more expensive. Several charge $10–20/month for what Garmin offers at $6.99.
  • Privacy is unclear. Garmin knows exactly where your data goes. With third-party tools, you're trusting a company you've probably never heard of with your full health history.

Garmin's AI runs on your actual sensor data at the source. That's a meaningful advantage.

What's still missing

One feature that doesn't exist yet — and should: a chat function. Right now, Connect+ pushes insights to you. But you can't ask questions back. "Why was my HRV low this week?" "Should I do a long run today given my Body Battery?" "What's my recovery trend over the last month?" You get summaries, but no conversation. An interactive AI coach that could answer follow-up questions would make Connect+ significantly more valuable. Hopefully it's coming.

Is it worth $6.99/month?

If you train regularly and want better coaching, more personalised insights, and nutrition tracking in one place — yes. It's less than a single session with a personal trainer, and it's running on your actual data every day.

If you're a casual user who checks your step count and doesn't engage with HRV or training load, you probably don't need it. The free tier covers the basics well.
