Day 64: Training Target

If you have ever tried to run a specific distance in a specific time, you know the annoying part is not the running. It is the constant mental math.

Am I still on pace? Do I need to speed up? Can I back off a little? If your goal is something simple like 5 km in 30 minutes, you can calculate the target pace once before the run. But during the run, with small hills, traffic lights, wind, corners, and tired legs, that calculation quickly becomes distracting.

This is where Training Target on your Garmin becomes useful. Instead of only recording what you did, your watch can actively guide the run while you are doing it.

What Training Target does

A training target lets you give your watch a goal before you start. For example:

  • Run 5 km in 30 minutes
  • Run 10 km in 1 hour
  • Run for a target distance while keeping the finish time under control

Once the activity starts, the watch compares your current progress with the goal. Instead of asking you to constantly convert distance, elapsed time, and pace in your head, it shows whether you are ahead, behind, or roughly on track.

Why this is better than checking average pace

Average pace is useful, but it still leaves the decision-making to you. If your average pace is slightly too slow, how much should you speed up? If you are ahead, can you relax or are you only ahead because the first kilometer was downhill?

Training Target removes a lot of that friction. The watch has the target built in from the start, so it can guide you toward the finish instead of only showing raw numbers.

How to use it

  1. Open the Run activity on your Garmin
  2. Before pressing start, open the Training menu
  3. Select Quick Workout or the training target option available on your watch
  4. Enter the target distance
  5. Enter the target time
  6. Start the workout and follow the guidance on the watch

The exact menu names can differ slightly between Garmin models, but the idea is the same: set the goal before the run, then let the watch keep you honest.

When to use it

This feature is great for controlled easy runs, progression runs, and any workout where you want a specific finish outcome without turning the whole thing into a spreadsheet.

For example, if your easy run goal is 5 km in 30 minutes, Training Target helps you avoid accidentally turning it into a 5 km race. If you are running too fast early, the watch will make that obvious. If you are drifting too slow, you will know before the end of the run.

The main benefit

The point is peace of mind. You set the target once, then run. Your Garmin handles the tracking, and you can focus on effort, breathing, form, and enjoying the run.

It is a small feature, but once you use it for goal-based runs, it is hard to go back to doing the math yourself.
