Analyse your Garmin data with AI, the easy way

I've written before about connecting Garmin to Claude through MCP, which gives the AI live access to your account. It's the better long-term setup — but it involves a terminal, and for a lot of people that's where it ends.

Here's the version with no setup at all. It takes one export and about five minutes of waiting.

Step 1: export your data from Garmin

Garmin has to let you download everything they hold on you, so there's an official button for it. Go to garmin.com/account/datamanagement and request an export of your data.

You can also reach it from Garmin Connect on the web: click your profile in the top right, then Account Settings, then look for Export Your Data.

You won't get the file immediately. Garmin emails you a download link, and depending on how many years of activities you have it can take anywhere from a few minutes to a day. Download the zip when it arrives and unpack it somewhere you can find it.

What's inside is genuinely everything: every activity in the format it was uploaded, plus JSON files covering sleep, heart rate, stress, Body Battery, steps, weight and your user profile.

Step 2: point the AI at the folder

Open the Claude desktop app (ChatGPT's desktop app works the same way) and give it access to the unpacked folder. Then just ask your question in plain language.

That's the whole setup. No terminal, no tokens, no install.

What to actually ask

The difference between a useful answer and generic AI filler is entirely in how specific your question is. Vague in, vague out. Some that work well:

  • "Look at my sleep data for the last three months. What's actually driving my bad nights? Compare weekdays to weekends, and look at whether late or hard training sessions correlate with worse sleep."
  • "Based on my real training history in this export, build me a 12-week plan to run a sub-50 10K. Start from my current weekly volume, not an idealised beginner."
  • "Has my resting heart rate trended up or down over the last year, and does it line up with periods of higher training load?"
  • "Find the weeks where I increased volume more than 10% and tell me what happened to my HRV and sleep in the two weeks after."

Why this beats asking a chatbot cold

Ask any AI "how do I sleep better" and you'll get the same eight bullet points everyone gets: dark room, no screens, consistent bedtime. Useless, because it isn't about you.

Point it at your own export and it's working from your actual numbers — your bedtimes, your HRV, your training load, your resting heart rate, measured on your wrist every night for however many years you've owned the watch. It can tell you which of those generic tips your data suggests would actually move the needle, and which you're already doing fine on.

I used exactly this to work on my own sleep, got specific and unglamorous guidance out of it, and it worked.

Two caveats

It's a snapshot, not a connection. The export is frozen at the moment you downloaded it. Ask again in two months and you're analysing stale data — you'd need to export again. That's the one real advantage of the MCP setup: it always sees today's numbers.

It's your full health history. Treat the folder accordingly, and be deliberate about what you upload and where.

If you'd rather have the live connection and don't mind ten minutes of copy-paste in a terminal, the MCP route is written up here:
