Garmin Not Charging? Clean the Connector First

If your Garmin looks like it charged overnight but didn't move at all, the pins on the charging cable are probably dirty — not broken. Here's the fix.
Day 108: Garmin Not Charging? Clean the Connector First
The proprietary charging connector on Garmin watches can be flaky. The most annoying version of this: you plug in overnight, wake up, and the battery hasn't moved at all.
Why the connection drops
The pins on the watch and the contacts on the cable rely on a clean, firm connection to transfer power. Over time they collect sweat residue, dead skin, and dust — a build-up sometimes called "sweat cheese" for a reason. That residue is enough to break the electrical contact, even when the cable looks correctly clipped in.
The fix
- Unplug the cable
- Wipe the watch's charging contacts and the cable's pins with a dry cloth or a cotton swab
- For stubborn residue, lightly dampen the cloth with water (unplugged, and let both sides dry fully before reconnecting)
- Reconnect and check that it clicks or seats firmly in place
Do this every few weeks, especially if you train a lot, and you'll avoid the "fully charged watch that isn't actually charged" surprise.
