Connect Your Garmin to Claude Safely: No Password Needed

Garmin now gives you a Personal API key, so Claude can read your own Garmin data without you ever sharing your password. Here's how to set it up in three steps with my open-source Claude extension.
Stop sharing your Garmin password with AI tools
Until now, connecting your Garmin data to an AI tool meant handing your Garmin Connect email and password to software that Garmin didn't make. It worked, but it was never a great idea.
Garmin has now released its own Personal API: you create a personal key in Garmin Connect, and that key (not your password) is what gives a tool access to your data. You can delete it any time. It's the best and safest way to connect your Garmin to Claude, and it takes about two minutes.
What the Personal API key is
Garmin describes it as a way for customers to "securely access their own Garmin Connect data using an API". A few things worth knowing:
- It's your own key: no login details are shared with anyone
- Garmin shows the key only once, so copy it straight away and treat it like a password
- You choose how long it's valid: 30, 90, 180 days or one year. Garmin emails you about a week before it expires
- You can delete it at any time, and the key stops working immediately
- It's meant for personal use, not for commercial apps serving many users
Step 1: create your key in Garmin Connect
On your computer, open Garmin Connect on the web, go to Settings → Personal API Key and select Create Key. Accept the terms, pick an expiry and copy the key.
Step 2: add the extension to Claude
Download the extension I built and drag it into the Claude app on your computer (or double-click it), then choose Install.
Download garmin-personal-api.mcpb →You need Claude Desktop for this, because extensions don't run in the browser version.
Step 3: paste your key
Paste the key when Claude asks for it, select Save and make sure the extension is switched on. That's it. When your key expires, renew it under Claude Desktop → Settings → Extensions → Garmin Personal API → Configure.
What to ask Claude
Start with something simple: "How did I sleep last night?" or "How did I sleep this week?". You'll see Claude call the Garmin tools and answer with your own numbers. Other good questions:
- "Is my HRV trending up or down this month?"
- "How has my resting heart rate changed over the last 30 days?"
- "Compare my stress and Body Battery on workout days versus rest days"
- "Show my last five runs and tell me what stands out"
The extension can read sleep, HRV, heart rate and resting heart rate, SpO2, Body Battery, stress, steps, activities, weight, fitness age, hydration, food log, heart rate zones and menstrual cycle data. For deeper analysis, try the prompts from the three-month sleep analysis.
What it can't do
- It's read-only. It can't create workouts or send anything to your watch. If you want that, the MissingMCP route in Day 139 can
- Some metrics aren't in Garmin's Personal API: training readiness, training status, training load, VO2 max, badges and gear
Is the extension safe?
- Your key is stored on your own computer by Claude Desktop (in the system keychain), not on a server of mine
- The extension talks directly to Garmin from your computer. I never see your key or your data
- The code is public, so anyone can check what it does: garmin-personal-api-claude-extension on GitHub
One honest note: when you ask Claude a question, the Garmin data it needs is of course sent to Claude as part of that conversation, just as with any tool you connect. And this is an unofficial project by Garmin School, not affiliated with Garmin. It's not medical advice.
