Four Signs Your Garmin Knows You're Overtrained Before You Do

Four Signs Your Garmin Knows You're Overtrained Before You Do

Overtraining doesn't announce itself with tiredness — it shows up in your data days earlier. These are the four signals to watch, why one alone means nothing, and the unglamorous fix.

Your Garmin knows you're overtrained before you do

Overtraining doesn't start with feeling tired. By the time you feel it, you're already well into it. It starts in your data, usually days earlier — and your watch is recording all four warning signs whether you look at them or not.

One: Training Status flips to Unproductive or Overreaching

These two mean slightly different things, and both are worth taking seriously.

Unproductive means your fitness is going down while you're still training. Specifically, your VO2 Max estimate is trending downward despite an active load. You're putting the work in and getting less back — the clearest definition of digging a hole there is.

Overreaching means your training load has spiked above what your recent fitness supports. Short bursts of this are a normal part of a hard block. Weeks of it are not.

Two: HRV Status goes Unbalanced or Low

Heart rate variability is measured against your own baseline, built over weeks — which is what makes it useful. Unbalanced means you've drifted outside your normal range; Low means you're sitting below it.

This is your autonomic nervous system reporting that it isn't recovering between sessions. It's the least voluntary signal on this list — you can talk yourself into feeling fine, but you can't talk your HRV up.

Three: your resting heart rate creeps up

A few beats per minute above your normal. It looks like nothing — 48 instead of 44 — and it's one of the oldest and most reliable markers in endurance sport. An elevated resting heart rate over several days means your body is still working on recovery it hasn't finished.

The key word is your. The number itself doesn't matter; the deviation from your own baseline does.

Four: Body Battery stops fully recharging overnight

A healthy night takes you back up towards the top of your range. When you start waking at 60 instead of 90, sleep has stopped doing its job — either because there wasn't enough of it, or because your body spent the night dealing with training stress instead of recovering from it.

Several mornings in a row of an incomplete recharge is one of the most legible signals your watch produces.

One signal is noise. Three is a pattern.

This is the part that matters, and the part people get wrong.

Any one of these on its own means very little. HRV drops after a glass of wine. Resting heart rate rises when the bedroom is too warm. Body Battery takes a hit from a late meal or a stressful day that had nothing to do with running. Reacting to every individual dip will just make you anxious and stop you training.

But two or three of them at the same time, sustained over several days — that's your body waving a flag. That combination is much harder to explain away, and it's the point at which you should actually change something.

The fix is boring

Two easy days. That's genuinely it.

Not two days off — two days of easy zone 2 work, or a walk, keeping the habit and the aerobic stimulus while dropping the intensity that's digging the hole. For most people that's enough to bring HRV back into range and let Body Battery recharge properly.

Two boring days now is a much better trade than six weeks off with an injury later. The athletes who stay healthy aren't the ones who train hardest — they're the ones who back off early, when the data asks them to and before their body forces them to.

Training Status, HRV Status and Body Battery aren't on every Garmin — the entry-level models leave several of them out. If you want to know whether yours tracks all four:
