Your Apple Watch Battery Is Dying — And It's Costing You Your Sleep Data

Apple rates its watch batteries at 80% capacity after 1,000 charge cycles — roughly two to three years of daily charging. A one-day watch becomes a half-day watch, and the first thing you lose is sleep tracking.

Your Apple Watch is already dying

And I mean that literally, not as a dig.

Apple designs its watch batteries to retain up to 80% of original capacity after 1,000 full charge cycles. Charge once a day, as basically every Apple Watch owner does, and you reach that point in roughly two and a half to three years. Below about 80% health, most people notice it no longer comfortably lasts a full day.

That's the problem. It was already a one-day watch. Now it's a half-day watch.

The hidden cost: you stop tracking your sleep

Here's the chain reaction almost nobody plans for.

A degraded battery means charging every night, because that's the only window you're not wearing it. Which means it isn't on your wrist while you sleep. Which means no sleep stages, no overnight HRV, no resting heart rate trend, no recovery data.

You bought a health tracker, and the thing quietly stops tracking the half of your life where recovery actually happens. Not because the sensors failed — because the battery can't stay on your wrist long enough to use them.

What a Garmin does differently

Days on a single charge, not hours. A Forerunner 265 is rated up to 13 days in smartwatch mode; a fēnix 8 up to 16. Even entry-level models run about 11 days. Some of mine genuinely go two weeks.

Charging becomes something you do occasionally, in a spare twenty minutes, rather than a nightly ritual that costs you your sleep data. The watch stays on your wrist, so it actually sees your sleep, your recovery and your resting heart rate — every night, without you thinking about it.

And then there's the training side

Battery aside, this is where the gap is widest. Training Readiness, Body Battery, HRV Status, Training Status, VO2 Max, recovery time, lactate threshold, race predictors, PacePro pacing strategies, structured workouts — Apple simply doesn't have equivalents for most of it.

Apple's watch is an outstanding smartwatch that also tracks workouts. Garmin's is a training instrument that also does notifications. Which one is right depends entirely on which of those sentences describes what you want.
