How to Track a Hyrox Properly on Your Garmin

Eight runs and eight stations is sixteen legs — but you don't build a sixteen-step workout. You build two activities and let them loop, and you get a clean split for every run and every station.

Track a Hyrox on your Garmin, with a split for every leg

A Hyrox is eight 1 km runs and eight stations, alternating, in a fixed order that's identical at every event worldwide: SkiErg, sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, rowing, farmers carry, sandbag lunges, wall balls. Only the weights change between divisions.

That's sixteen legs, and the instinct is to build a sixteen-step custom workout. Don't. You only need two activities, and you let them repeat.

Step 1: make an "Arena run" activity

On your watch, open your activity list, press Add, and choose Copy Activity. Pick Run and name it Arena run. Then, in its settings:

  • Turn GPS/satellites off. You're running loops indoors in an arena. GPS will be useless at best and will wreck your distance at worst — the watch will use the accelerometer instead
  • Turn Auto Lap off. You want laps triggered by you, not by an arbitrary 1 km marker

Step 2: make a "Station" activity

Same thing again — Copy Activity, but this time pick Cardio and name it Station. In its settings:

  • Turn Auto Lap off
  • Set up the data fields so you can see lap time and heart rate. During a station those are the only two numbers that matter

Step 3: build the multisport activity

Now create a custom multisport activity, name it Hyrox, and add your two new activities to it — Arena run first, then Station. Then in the multisport settings:

  • Repeat: on — this is the whole trick. It loops the two legs indefinitely instead of ending after one pass
  • Transitions: off — Hyrox has no break between run and station, so a transition leg would just add noise

That's the setup done. On race day you start the Hyrox activity and press the lap/next button once at every changeover — sixteen presses across the race. You end up with one clean file with sixteen splits, so you can see exactly what each run and each station cost you.

No multisport on your watch? Use this instead

Custom multisport is limited to mid-range and up — an entry-level Forerunner won't have it. You can still get sixteen usable splits with a single activity:

  1. Copy the Run activity and name it Hyrox
  2. Turn GPS off — same reason as above, you're indoors on a looped course
  3. Turn Auto Lap off so nothing triggers automatically
  4. Put lap time and heart rate on the main data screen
  5. Start it once at the gun, and hit lap manually at every single changeover

You lose the run/station labelling — every leg records as running — but you still get the sixteen splits and the heart rate trace, which is the data you actually review afterwards. Odd-numbered laps are your runs, even-numbered ones are your stations.

One thing to practise

Whichever route you take, rehearse the button press in training. Hitting lap with chalky hands, gloves on, and your heart rate at 180 is not the moment to discover which button you mapped it to. Do a couple of sessions with the exact setup before race day.
