10 Garmin Settings That Are Quietly Eating Your Battery

From gesture wake to always-on display, ten default settings quietly cost you battery for very little in return. Turn them off and get real battery life back.

10 Garmin settings you should change today

Nothing is broken on your watch. These settings are just working exactly as designed — and what they're designed to do costs you battery for very little in return.

1. Gesture wake

Every time you turn your wrist, the screen lights up. Sounds convenient, until you count how often it actually fires: in the car, cooking, typing, rolling over in bed. That's hundreds of wake-ups a day, and you look at almost none of them.

Turn it off, and tap the screen when you actually want to check it. You lose nothing you were using and get a meaningful chunk of battery back, especially on AMOLED models where lighting the display is the single biggest power draw.

2. Always-on display

On AMOLED watches this is the big one. Keeping the screen lit around the clock, even dimmed, can roughly halve your battery life compared to a screen that only wakes on demand. If you're not glancing at your wrist constantly, turn it off — you already have gesture wake or a button press to check the time.

3. Backlight brightness and timeout

Two separate settings, same idea: turn the brightness down from the default, and shorten how long the backlight stays lit after you check it. Most people run both higher than they need without ever noticing.

4. Pulse Ox

Blood oxygen is the most power-hungry sensor on the watch — the LED has to shine straight through your skin, which draws far more than a simple heart rate reading. Unless you're training at altitude, monitoring a respiratory condition, or specifically curious about your sleep breathing, it's not a number you check often.

Turn off all-day Pulse Ox and battery life improves noticeably, particularly overnight. If you only care about it during sleep, most watches let you keep sleep-only tracking and drop the all-day mode — a good middle ground.

5. GPS mode

Most watches default to All-Systems or Multi-Band GNSS. That mode genuinely earns its keep between skyscrapers or under heavy tree cover, where extra satellite frequencies fight through reflection and signal loss. On your normal loop around the neighbourhood, it's doing nothing you'd notice.

In your activity settings, switch GPS mode to plain GPS-only for everyday runs and rides. Accuracy stays more than good enough for pace, distance and route, and GPS is one of the single biggest battery drains during any tracked activity — this is the change with the biggest payoff on this list. Save multi-band for when you actually need it: a dense urban core, deep tree cover, or a race where every metre of accuracy counts.

6. Wrist-based heart rate, when you're wearing a strap

If you train with a chest strap for accuracy, you're paying for the optical sensor twice — once on your wrist, once on your chest. Most watches let you disable wrist HR for that specific activity while keeping it on for everyday tracking. Small saving per session, but it adds up if you strap up often.

7. Wi-Fi

Left on, your watch periodically scans for known networks to sync in the background. If you're not relying on Wi-Fi syncing day to day — Bluetooth to your phone covers most people's needs — turn it off in Connectivity settings.

8. Music playback from the watch

Storing and streaming music straight from the watch to Bluetooth headphones is one of the fastest ways to drain a battery during an activity — the radio has to stay active the entire time. If you're running with your phone anyway, controlling playback from there costs the watch nothing.

9. Phone connectivity and notifications

Keeping a constant Bluetooth link to your phone for notifications, weather updates and live tracking has a real, if smaller, cost. If you're heads-down at your desk and don't need buzzes for every message, turning off phone connectivity for a stretch saves a bit more.

10. Use Battery Saver instead of hunting through menus

Most modern Garmins have a built-in Battery Saver or custom Power Mode that flips several of these at once — backlight, phone connectivity, wrist HR and always-on display included — and you can usually customise exactly which ones it touches. Once you know which settings matter to you from this list, build them into one mode and switch it on with a single tap instead of digging through nine menus.
